100,000 Gallons of Raw Sewage Dumped Into Hudson River

The DEC has issued an alert after untreated sewage was released into the Hudson River this week.

The discharge of waste water started on March 19 at 4:00 in the afternoon. According to the DEC, the stream of untreated waste water continued to flow into the Hudson River for over an hour. During that time an estimated 100,000 gallons of raw sewage was dumped directly into the Hudson River.

The DEC reports that baby wipes have been seen floating in the water near Albany as well as other "floatables." While disgusting to look at, it's even more alarming when you take into consideration that many Hudson Valley communities receive their drinking water from the river.

The cause of the spill has been determined to be melting snow. Apparently the running water was too much for the system to take and caused the overflow. In a YouTube video from last spring, raw sewage can be seen floating in an undisclosed section of the Hudson River.

Fishing season kicks off next week with anglers expected to hit the Hudson River in search of striped bass. Eating fish caught in the Hudson River is not recommended.
