A recent study has named four Hudson Valley areas in their top ten for the most expensive places to raise a family in the United States.

According to MarketWatch, in some places it costs parents into the six figures per year to raise a family. And that's without putting any money into savings. The MarketWatch study looked at 618 metro areas and calculated the cost of living based on the costs of housing, child care, food, transportation, taxes, health care and other necessities. They classified a family as one with two parents and at least two children.

According to the study, the most expensive area to live in the Hudson Valley is Westchester County. The suburban region outside New York City ranked as the 4th most expensive place to raise a family. In Westchester it costs families $99,592 on average just to get by per year. The area also has high taxes, around $15,589 a year on average.

MarketWatch classified Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown as one area, which finished as the 7th most expensive place in America to raise a family.

"These towns typically aren’t known for ultra-posh living, but due in part to high housing costs (which plague many towns near New York City), these municipalities collectively claim the No. 7 spot on the list. It costs a family of four $92,837 to pay the bills in this area."

If you are wondering, the most expensive place to raise a family in the U.S. was Washington D.C. The study finds that a family of four needs $106,493 just to get by in Washington, with child care costing over $30,000.

Other New York areas that cracked the top 10: Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island placed 2nd. New York City finished 4th. Ithaca landed 9th on the list.
