When A&P announced that they would be declaring bankruptcy last month, the jobs of Hudson Valley residents were left up in the air. Now we know how significant a number of jobs that might be.

According to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notices, as many as 3,300 Hudson Valley jobs could be vanishing--a quarter of the 13,000 total jobs being lost by the supermarket's employees.

The notice cites a closing date of Nov. 26. A&P is in the midst of soliciting bids for all of its stores and, depending on the results of that auction, the number of store closings and layoffs could be less.

Three supermarkets, Acme Markets, Stop & Shop and Key Food, have placed bids on 118 stores, including 20 in the lower Hudson Valley. Ten other stores in the region are awaiting potential buyers, with A&P expecting to receive other bids for its stores by Sept. 11 and court approval to sell its stores as early as October. Local unions have said they initiated negotiations with potential new buyers.

Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notices are required to be released to give employees 90 days' notice to prepare for the loss of their jobs.
