Orange County Police Chief Shot, Long Standoff Ends With Suspect Dead

A Hudson Valley police chief was shot. After a long standoff with police the alleged shooter is dead from a gunshot wound. It’s unclear at this time if the suspect was killed during gunfire with police or if it was self-inflicted.

On Tuesday around 9:20 a.m., police responded to a domestic incident on Abbey Lane in Maybrook.

During the interview with the suspect, 28-year-old Anthony Bostick from Maybrook, there was an exchange of gunfire and Maybrook Police Chief Arnold “Butch” Amthor was struck in the upper torso, police say.

Chief Amthor is expected to make a full recovery following the shooting, Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus announced in a press release.

He was transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh after he was shot while investigating a domestic dispute.

“I worked with Chief Amthor 20 years ago in the City of Newburgh and we remain close friends,” Neuhaus said in the release. “Butch is a true gentleman who has dedicated his life to law enforcement. I ask Orange County residents to keep Chief Amthor and his family in their prayers. Fortunately, he is expected to make a full recovery. However, this incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of police work and how deserving of our support and encouragement law enforcement is.”

Amthor also serves as the chief of police in the Town of Montgomery.

Anthony Bostick was wanted on charges relating to a domestic incident that was reported by his girlfriend, police say. Bostick’s girlfriend also told officials Bostick had suicidal thoughts.

When officers knocked on the door, Bostick refused to open the door, or surrender to police. A source tells Hudson Valley Post that Bostick told officers he wouldn’t leave until there was a warrant.

After Bostick was informed that an arrest warrant had been issued, he still refused to open the door, police say. When officers attempted to enter, they discovered that in addition to the door being locked, objects had been placed behind the door in an attempt to barricade it.

When police entered a barricaded home, Bostick fired a shot, hitting the Maybrook police chief in the shoulder. Another shot was heard, as police fled.

The Alternative Learning Center in Maybrook, which is near the home, was placed on lockdown.

Following a standoff for several hours, Bostick was found dead, police say.

The Orange County D.A.’s office released chilling and graphic bodycam footage of an Orange County suspect firing shots at police, hitting the police chief. Warning, some images may be graphic:
