A Newburgh man who ran for Mayor this year was arrested after police allege he was driving the wrong-way on Interstate 87.

Paul D. Koksvik, 53, was arrested by New York State Police in Kingston after a pursuit that ended in the Town of Olive. Koksvik was spotted traveling southbound in the northbound lane on Interstate 87.

Police say Koksivk then exited the Thruway in Kingston and proceeded west on Route 28. At this point his car was stopped in the Town of Ulster by the Thruway State Police. However this story was far from over.

Police allege Koksivk then fled from the traffic stop and continued driving on Route 28. A high-speed chase ensued into the Towns of Ulster, Kingston and Hurley. He was finally stopped by pursuing police in the Town of Olive.

Koksvik was arrested and charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer and resisting arrest.

Update: According to the Times Herald Record, Koksvik ran for Newburgh Mayor on the Libertarian ticket. However his name did not appear on the ballot. He did receive one write-in vote.

The police press release about Koksvik’s wrong-way driving and pursuit came on the same day an alleged drunk woman drove the wrong-way on the Thruway between Sloatsburg and Newburgh.
