Could a new oil and gas pipeline be coming to the Hudson Valley?

Penn Energy reports Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings has filed the application that would see two underground oil pipelines running from Albany to Linden, New Jersey. Reportedly, most of the pipelines would follow the New York State Thruway.

Should the application be approved, the southbound pipe would carry crude oil, while the northbound pipe would carry heating oil and gasoline. The permit application now sits with the Thruway Authority.

There has been some resistance in the local communities the pipeline would run through. A full environmental review is expected and the public will have an opportunity to have their voices heard.

Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings claims the pipeline is a safer alternative to existing delivery methods. Crude oil is currently shipped via rail and barge, departing from the Port of Albany. Pending approval, the new pipeline would run just under 180 miles.
