Update, 10:33AM, 12/11: This story was updated with additional information from the New York State Police.

A man died at the Gap Warehouse in Fishkill as a result of a construction accident Saturday afternoon.

New York State Police said the construction crew was working demolition on the site of August's massive fire at the facility. A piece of steel beam and tin entered the cab of a Komatsu excavator, killing the machine's operator.

Fishkill and Rombout fire departments were dispatched to the scene to assist the New York State Police. Helicopter transport was called for but canceled when the worker succumbed to his injuries.

The machine operator's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The operator worked for Environmental Remediation Services Inc. (ESRI) out of Syracuse. The company was subcontracted by Chicago-based Clayco Contractors of Chicago, which had received the contract for the demolition work at the site. ESRI has been working at the Gap site since Nov. 16.

Authorities are still investigating the fire in Building 100, which destroyed the 1.3 million square foot facility in August. Arson is suspected but no suspects have been named. Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently held a press conference there and announced every worked displaced was back to work.
