Earlier this week, we learned that Colin Trevorrow had asked for a small favor from Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While the exact nature of the thing remains a mystery, we do know that it’s a small moment in a scene that will probably make sense once Trevorrow’s Episode IX comes out.

In an interview with the Irish Examiner, Trevorrow tried really hard not to say exactly what it was, but did call it a “tiny little moment.”

Not even a whole scene, just a tiny little moment. But it’s amazing how tiny moments can be… I think that’s almost become a right of passage now, for each director to ask for just one little thing. What that is to me is representative of how collaborative the Lucasfilm environment is. Now that Rian is finishing his film I definitely check in with him as much as I can.

His request does have a precedent in the new Star Wars trilogy: Rian Johnson asked J.J. Abrams to change one small thing in his Force Awakens script — specifically, that Rey journey to Luke’s hideout on Ahch-to with R2-D2, not with her new friend BB-8. That probably means R2 has a few more secrets up his proverbial sleeve to dole out when the time is right, but it also has a few interesting character implications too. Rey is now completely alone and isolated from the friends she made in The Force Awakens, which means she’ll really have to overcome that sense of isolation and throw herself into her training. And what will Luke and R2’s reunion be like? The little droid does have a penchant for sulking.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15.
