A police officer was found dead on the patio of a popular Newburgh bar.

On Sunday around 11:00 a.m., City of Newburgh police were called to the outside patio of Billy Joe's Ribworks on Front Street in Newburgh for reports of an unresponsive body.

Arriving officers found a 36-year-old white man deceased from a single gunshot wound to the head, police say.

Following an investigation, the cause of death has been ruled a suicide, according to City of Newburgh police.

Sources identified the man to the New York Daily News and New York Post as NYPD detective Nicholas Budney.

According to his obituary, Budney is from Rock Tavern and formally Cold Spring. He graduated from Haldane in 2000.

Budney was also a member of the North Highland Fire Department and was named a Fireman of the Year.
