There have been a number of whale sightings near New York City over the past few days.

Sadly, one whale was reportedly killed after being hit by a ship several days ago near New Jersey. The thirty foot carcass resurfaced off Jersey City Wednesday in the Hudson River, according to NBC New York.

Some had reported that the dead whale was a humpback, however Bob Schoelkopf of Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine claims it may be a fin whale.

Paul Seaswerda, who runs Gotham Whale, a nonprofit that studies marine life around the city says the past two years have been very busy for whale sightings near New York City and New Jersey.

Unfortunately, 2015 was the worst year for accidents involving whales in the Tri-State area. Marine scientists says that nine whales were reportedly killed, mostly by ship strikes.

NOAA put out a warning Tuesday, informing everyone to watch out for whales in the water.
