Tubing the Esopus is a great way to spend a summer afternoon. I've also heard that there are some great fishing spots along the creek, but my husband would know more about that than me. As the school year winds down, and long, summer days are right around the corner, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, in conjunction with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, are working on getting the Esopus ready for all of us to enjoy.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection will be conducting a DEC approved release of water to the upper Esopus Creek from the Schoharie Reservoir through the tunnel portal in Shandaken this weekend to provide additional flows for recreational activities on the creek, including tubing and kayaking.

This will begin at 6 pm this Friday and will continue through this Sunday afternoon. During this time the Allaben fishing access site will be open for fishing but users should be cautious due to the high flows and obey all appropriate signs and restrictions.

Have fun this summer and enjoy the creek, but, as always, be careful, wear your personal floatation devices (PFDs) and take advantage of the numerous private guides and vendors that offer recreational boating and tubing services on the Esopus Creek.
