With the prominence of social media sites in our culture, it doesn't take a whole lot of time for information to spread.

This is awesome .04% of the time.

The rest of the time, it leads to misinformation being spread about politics, pop culture, health and crime concerns. Since people apparently only have just enough time to click "Share" and continue to spread this information instead of going to Google or Snopes to verify the facts, I've decided to use this corner of the internet to help out.

So, here we have the first entry in DEUCE DEBUNKS. This is a relatively old story that I've seen return to my newsfeed recently, so let's get to it:

Did Samsung pay Apple a billion dollars in nickels?

Sure, Samsung owes Apple a lot of money due to a court judgment (the original decision of which is actually currently being challenged). And sure, it would be incredibly, awesomely petty of Samsung to pay them in nickels. But you shouldn't need Snopes for this one (although if you do, they dismantle it all here). Reading that Snopes article is the easy way; let's think this one through.

  • This company exists to make money, right? Why would they incur the expense of acquiring and shipping 20 billion in nickels?
  • If this were true, why would you have only heard about it through some link shared on Facebook by the weird dude you sat behind in 11th grade English class? Wouldn't EVERY news source be having a laugh about this?
  • The actual link to the translated story (the original was a very well-labeled 'humor' piece written in Spanish) actually ends "You didn’t think this could be real right? but hey! you loved it"

Regretfully this isn't true but, really, just think about it. Like most of the nonsense people share on Facebook, this, too, is... well, nonsense.

Sorry I had to ruin the fun with logic and stuff.
