If you're like me and don't know if school zone rules apply in the summer, you'll want to read this.

Schools out, but what's the deal with school zones? I mean, do the school zone traffic laws still apply when school isn't in session? Am I allowed to drive 30 mph in a school zone during August or do I have to go 20 mph? Before I wrote this article, I really had no clue. But, after speaking to a police officer and doing my research, I have the answer.

I spoke to a City of Poughkeepsie police officer and asked if school zone traffic laws still apply. Her response? Yes, they do.

According to Traffic Tickets, there are different penalties for school zone traffic violations when school is not in session. From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a school day when school is in session, a violation would have a fine of $90-$300 for going 1 to 10 mph over the school zone speed limit. When school is not in session, whether it's after hours or a holiday, the fine for going 1 to 10 mph over the limit would be $45-$150. Plus all the fees and surcharges that come with traffic violations, as it would apply for regular school hour violations.

Also, you would still get the 3 points on your license if you violate school zone traffic laws when school is not in session, just like you would if school was in session.

The moral of the story? School zone traffic laws still apply when school is not in session.
