A Hudson Valley mall parking lot became a terrifying scene as onlookers dialed 911 to help rescue a dog from an unventilated, hot car.

The scene is all too familiar, a dog locked in a car in the blazing sun. It happened on Sunday at the Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston. According to the Daily Freeman, police responded to complaints from shoppers who spotted a dog sitting in a car with the windows rolled up.

Police say the car belonged to Joshua Rivera from Palenville. Rivera was arrested on Sunday afternoon near Macy’s and charged with confinement of a companion animal in a vehicle during extreme temperatures.

The dog was removed from the car by police and was returned to its owner after it was determined that the pet did not need any medical attention.
