You have probably seen one or two of these while driving around the Hudson Valley.

Are road side memorials a safety hazard? The Department of Transportation thinks they are and have begun removing them from roads in the Albany area.

It is common in a lot of areas for families to put up a cross or a memorial after a loved one is killed in a car accident and now it looks like the DOT is removing them because they see them as a safety hazard.

According to WTEN, the DOT says it’s not just the safety of the drivers, but also family members who stop by the side of the road to take care of the memorials.

The memorials are also moved when crews are in the area and mow along the side of the road.

The DOT says that if you do put up a memorial and drive by and it is gone, you should contact them to locate your cross.
