A sad scene unfolded in Rhinebeck this weekend when an elderly man accidentally struck his wife with his car. Officials say the man had let her out so he could find a parking spot. According to the Poughkeepsie Journal:

The investigation is pending, but it appears the car was still in drive, and the driver may have thought it was in reverse, Campbell said. "When the vehicle accelerated, it shot forward" and struck the woman, who was standing in the street and got knocked onto the sidewalk.

Rhinebeck Fire and Police departments responded to the accident where they treated both the woman and her husband who was still in the vehicle. Both were transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital where the woman was pronounced dead. Officials plan on releasing her name today.
