Additional Information

Free tours of the terraced formal gardens at the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in Hyde Park. The volunteer guides of the F.W. Vanderbilt Garden Association will discuss the history of the gardens, with a focus on the Vanderbilt ownership and the mission of the all-volunteer, not-for-profit Association to rehabilitate and maintain the plants, shrubs, trees, and statuary in the gardens as they were in the 1930's just prior to Mr. Vanderbilt's death. They will also provide information about two major projects currently underway: the renovation of the "Cherry Walk" and the replanting of the Rose Garden terraces. Visitors can also visit the 1875 Toolhouse building to view photo albums of the gardens taken from the Vanderbilt era to the current day. While the tours are free, donations are gratefully accepted. Come to the garden entrance, just south of the mansion, for the free tour any time between 1:00 and 4:00 PM (weather permitting). Visitors should park in the Visitor Center parking lot, and walk down the gravel path from the Mansion to the gardens.
