Scenic Hudson's Long Dock Park, Beacon, NY
(Rain or Shine)
Come on down to the beautiful Long Dock Park on the Beacon Waterfront as the Hudson Valley Chapter of Curvy Girls International Scoliosis Support Group walk the trails to raise awareness of Scoliosis.

June 27th is International Scoliosis Awareness Day. This walk will take place at the same time as others across the country.

Scoliosis is an abnormal curving of the spine. Everyone’s spine naturally curves a tiny bit. But people with scoliosis have a spine that curves too much. Scoliosis impacts infants, adolescents, and adults worldwide with little regard to race or socio-economic status. The primary age of onset for scoliosis is 10-15 years old, occurring equally among both genders. However, females are eight times more likely to progress to a curve magnitude that requires treatment. (source scoliosis.org)

In addition to raising scoliosis awareness in our communities, in true ‘Curvy Girl Spirit’, we are also raising funds to help fellow Curvy Girls in Africa. One young lady we are hoping to help is Augustina. She is 15 years old and is currently in school studying with the hope of becoming a lawyer or a writer. She sometimes misses studies due to her scoliosis. Augustina was diagnosed of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in July 2013 and was supposed to have undergone surgery that year but has not been able to raise funds toward her surgery. She feels hopeful that she will one day get the needed support to help her undergo surgery. She doesn't have the same opportunity for treatment we have, and Hudson Valley Curvy Girls want to change that.

With our help she will be able to go to the FOCOS facility in Ghana. There she will spend months in preparation before having corrective spine surgery with Dr. Boachie of the Ortho Focos organization (www.orthofocos.org). With your help, Augustina, and other children like her, will have the scoliosis treatment they need.
