A transformer exploded at New York's Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant on Saturday evening, causing a fire. 

The transformer failure shutdown Indian Point Unit 3 around 6p.m. Saturday evening. The unit shutdwon automatically and is safe and stable, as reported by CBS 6. It is unknown how long the unit will be shut down.

The blaze was extinquished by a sprinkler system and company personnel. There was no radioactive release.

There were no reports of injuries in the blast and resulting fire.

Witnesses say they saw a huge ball of black smoke and then alarms audible across the river.

The fire started up again after being extinguished but has since been put out, officials said. There are no ongoing emergency threats.

The Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, supplies electricity for homes, businesses and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
