A fatal car crash on the Taconic State Parkway Sunday closed the heavily trafficked road in both directions for several hours.

Details are still surfacing but the Poughkeepsie Journal reports one person died while another was airlifted to Mid Hudson Regional Hospital of Westchester County in Poughkeepsie.

The incident occurred just before noon in the southbound lane of the Taconic. A Facebook comment from a woman named Kristen who claimed to be in the area, described the scene.

It was much more than a half mile delay. We were coming south on the Taconic at 2:45 pm and were at a standstill from Bulls Head Road on. It continues for the next hour until we got off at Salt Point Turnpike (one exit down) where the parkway was closed.

Police have yet to release the names of the victims pending family notification. The Taconic was recently named one of the most dangerous locations in New York.
