An explanation is sought as to why up to $5 million is missing from a Hudson Valley fire department.

LoHud reports Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department is the Firehouse in question which has led to the resignation of treasurer Michael Klein. The alleged theft occurred over several years and it is not known at this time how it happened.

The Mahopac department is one of three that serves Carmel. Cuts are expected and won't affect their operating budget but will eliminate the purchase of any new equipment. A plan was in place to replace a 1992 tanker with a new rig costing approximately $750,000.
