Funeral services for the final farewell of community activist John Flowers have been set for this Friday in the city of Poughkeepsie.

Flowers sadly passed away last week at the age of 71 after battling liver cancer. The humanitarian served the city of Poughkeepsie and it's residents for over 25 years. This friday is your chance to honor that memory and to celebrate John's legacy.

The wake for Flowers will be held from 8-11 a.m. at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie with the funeral to follow.

A police escort will then accompany the funeral procession to John M. Flowers Circle which was named for Flowers in June and will then continue  to Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery for burial.

The Flowers family has invited the public to attend all services as well as a celebration of life event at Waryas Park.

Yvonne Flowers, John's daughter, tells the Poughkeepsie Journal the event will have live music, food and will also allow visitors the opportunity to take to a microphone and share stories to honor her father.

City of Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik announced that during the events all parking in lots beneath City hall and across from the Mid-Hudson Civic Center will be free. The Mayor has also ordered flags at the Poughkeepsie City Hall and at John M. Flowers Circle to fly at half-mast to honor the community hero.
