A pitcher who played for Poughkeepsie's Marist College has become the first player in the school's history to be called up to the Major Leagues. Kevin McCarthy, who attended from 2011-13, will be playing for the Kansas City Royals in short order.

According to the Marist College website, McCarthy is in uniform as of tonight sporting number 61. He was drafted in the 16th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball first year player draft.

McCarthy began the year at the Double-A level, playing for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Over a 22 game span, he sported an impressive 3.12 ERA to go along with 11 saves. He was named to the league all-star team in June as a result of his performance. He was promoted to Triple-A around the all-star break where his numbers improved.

During his three years at Marist, McCarthy earned several awards including MAAC Co-relief pitcher of the year in 2013. His 12 saves currently rank as fourth best in Marist history.
