Here's how to score your very first Uber or Lyft ride for free.

Ride-sharing companies have been granted permission to start operating in the Hudson Valley on June 29. Signing up for service now will not only get you prepared to start hailing cars, but will also score you a free ride.

Uber users should download the company's free app now and get themselves registered for the service. Sign up for potential riders is pretty simple. Just enter your name, phone number and select a username and password. If you sign up now and use the code FTC20 you will also get your first ride free up to $20.

Lyft's service is similar to Uber's. Just download the app and sign up to create an account. You can enter the code 20LYFTPROMO to get $20 off your first ride.

Those who are unsure how Uber or Lyft works can take a quick tutorial on the companies' websites to familiarize themselves with the process. It's really as simple as inputting your destination, selecting a car and getting in. With free rides being offered by both, you may want to try each service to see which one you prefer before deciding on a favorite.
