New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, in conjunction with the Newburgh Police Department, has announced a Gun Buy Back program. The event will take place on Saturday August 20, 2016, 9AM to Noon, at the City of Newburgh Recreation Center.

According to their press release here are a few frequently asked questions about what happens at a gun buy back event:

  • Q. How do I bring a gun to the drop off site?
    A. Guns must be UNLOADED, and placed in a plastic bag, a paper bag, or a box.

  • Q. Can I transport the firearm in a car?
    A. Yes. It must be UNLOADED and in the trunk in a plastic or paper bag, or a box.

  • Q. How many firearms can I surrender?
    A. As many as you wish to provide.

  • Q. Can any member of the public surrender a gun?
    A. Licensed gun dealers, and active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible for this program.

The monies offered for the return of each weapon will be paid out in the form of gift cards. $25 for a non-working or antique firearm. $75 for rifles or shotguns. $100 for handguns and $150 for assault weapons.
