Although Halloween is a holiday meant for tricks, treats and lots of fun officials still want to remind "trick-or-treaters" to be safe when going door to door.

The Dutchess County Sheriffs Office has released some tips and recommendations to keep kids safe this Halloween.

  • Be bright at night—use reflective tape on costumes and treat bags, wear light colors, and carry flashlights.
  • Don’t wear a costume that obstructs vision, and wear lighter colored costumes.
  • Always look both ways and listen for traffic before crossing roadways.
  • Cross at corners, not between parked cars or mid-block.
  • Always walk on the sidewalks if there are any, but if there are no sidewalks then walk facing traffic on the left side of the road.
  • Younger children should always be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Parents are encourage to always sort through their child’s candy to avoid any potentially harmful items.

Officials also want to remind minors that many townships and cities in Dutchess County that have curfews on Halloween. You can contact your local municipality to find out if there is a curfew in your area.
