Hundreds in the community have started to gather and organize in an effort to restore and re-open the Poughkeepsie Skate Park.

The skate park located at Waryas Park was shut down last month after it was deemed unsafe by the city who according to the Poughkeepsie Journal sited there were large holes in the ramps and other concerning issues.

City Mayor Rob Rolison tells the Journal it's estimated it will cost about $18,000 to repair and about double that to construct a new park.

“We’re all in agreement in wanting to fix it,” Rolison said. “What I have found is that so many people and organizations want to get involved in making the city better. As a mayor, that’s very encouraging to see.”

Shortly after the park was closed there was an outpouring of support form the community and from those who utilize and love the park. A Facebook page called 'Save the Poughkeepsie Skate Park' was created and members began to organize ways to raise funds in an effort to re-open the park.

This past weekend organizers held their first fundraising event. Skate park committee member Sara Rupa Murali say's the event was a great success but there is still a long road ahead.

"The main goal of Saturday's fundraiser was to not only kick off our fundraising efforts but to let the community know what happened to the park, a lot of people did not even know that it had closed. It was also a chance for people to skate! This is skateboard season and unfortunately there's no park in Poughkeepsie. Through raffle sales (with many prizes donated by local businesses!) and t shirt sales (designed by Mike Long) we raised a decent amount of money for our first fundraiser!"

Ruap Muraki says there are several more fundraising events in the works, including a art auction that will feature the work of many local artist. With a minimum of $18,000 need to get the park back open the organization will need the continued support of the community.

"...we definitely have a long road ahead of us, but the group we have established is 100% dedicated and ambitious and I have no doubts about our ability to repair and reopen the park."
