My taste in beer was forever changed when I took my first sip of Sam Adams Octoberfest. Before that moment, I drank the simple mass produced lagers most beer companies offered like Coors Light and Michelob Ultra. I never drank for taste or refreshment, simply just to have a beer.

Over the past 10 years I’ve spoken to a lot of people who not only prefer craft beers, but love to craft it themselves. Anyone can do this. You just need a beer kit and a simple Youtube tutorial video can carry you the rest of the way.

Such was the case for three men in Highland who started brewing for themselves and eventually opened up their own brewery: Hudson Ale Works. Their story can be found in greater detail in this Hudson Valley Magazine article.

If you want to start brewing your own beer, just search online for a home brew shop to find one nearest you. It’s fun and still perfectly legal as long as you’re not trying to sell it.
