A Newburgh resident is having to take drastic measures as a number of feral cats have taken over a piece of property next to her home.

The Times Herald Record reports Newburgh resident Sandy Brooks has been dealing with the problem for nearly two years. She runs a daycare out of her home and is forced to keep the front door shut to prevent an overwhelming urine smell from coming into the house.

Local officials responded to the neighboring home on Cleft Avenue last year to address an animal hording situation. While animal control was able to remove many of the animals from the home, its thought that they didn't get them all, and now they've multiplied.

After the hoarding issue was thought to be resolved, the cat over population issue reemerged after a stray had kittens on the property. After that, Brooks said, the problem became too much to deal with.

This week, a vote will determine if Newburgh's City Council will foot the almost $2,000 bill to have the cats removed by a professional.
