Police say a driver ignored signs of a road closure as well as the warnings from construction workers and ended up with her car stuck in a sinkhole.

Around 6:00 a.m. Town of Ramapo police received a report of a water main break on Saddle River Road. The road was subsequently closed with construction barriers and cones. “There was no mistaking the road was closed,” Ramapo Patrol Lieutenant Robert Lancia told Hudson Valley Post.

An unnamed female driver proceeded to drive around the barriers, knocking over a cone in the process. Construction workers tried to stop her by waving and honking their horns, “they watched her as she continued to drive and literally the road sank beneath her vehicle until her car fell into the roadway,” said Lancia.

A tow truck company was called to the scene, but the roadway was too unstable so a second tow company had to come to pull the vehicle out.

Police say the car suffered water damage and likely other damage.

The driver wasn’t hurt in the accident but was ticketed and will have to pay for the tow truck and any damage to her car.
