A Hudson Valley gang leader will spend many years in jail for crimes that include murder, racketeering, and more.

In Southern District of New York Court 25-year-old Da’Quan Johnson, of Yonkers was sentenced to 30 years in prison for crimes he committed while the leader of a Yonkers based street gang the “Grimy M----f------” (“GMF”).

Officials say the Johnson and the GMF murdered Tyrone Aruther on December 27, 2013. Johnson plead guilty in January to racketeering conspiracy and to conspiring to murder rival gang members, resulting in the death of Arthur.

“Da’Quan Johnson was a leader of a violent, vicious street gang that terrorized the streets of southwest Yonkers with shootings, assaults, and drug dealing,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement. “On December 27, 2013, Johnson and his fellow gang members participated in a shooting that resulted in the senseless murder of an innocent man, Tyrone Arthur. Thanks to the hard work of the FBI and Yonkers Police Department, Johnson and the other members of GMF have been brought to justice.”

According to court documents, GMF and another gang, “the Strip Boyz,” controlled crack cocaine and marijuana distribution in Yonkers. During the summer of 2012 20 members of the Strip Boyz were arrested and charged with narcotics and firearms offenses.

Following the 2012 arrests, the GMF continued to engage in acts of violence and intimidation to preserve the gang’s dominance. The GMF had a number of violent fights with rival gangs resulting in assaults, stabbings, and shootings.

From approximately 2008 to 2014, GMF was engaged in a violent dispute with members of a rival gang from Highland Avenue known as “Highland.” The disagreements came to a bloody end on December 27, 2013.

Officials say s shooting occurred near an area controlled by the GMF. The GMF were told members of Highland were responsible for the shooting. In retaliation Johnson and other members fired bullets a crowd of people that formed for a candlelight vigil. One of the bullets hit Arthur in the chest, killing him.

Johnson was sentenced to 20 years in prison on the racketeering conspiracy and 10 years in prison on the murder conspiracy, to run consecutively.
