A Hudson Valley man is accused of trying to post bail with a stolen credit card. He’s also accused of flushing the evidence down a toilet.

In June, while 28-year-old Dustin T. Carmichael, of Napanoch was inside the Ulster County Jail members of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division notified the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Detective Unit when they received an electronic notification that a female placed a credit card transaction for $3,255 in an attempt to bail Carmichael out of jail.

Police say they discovered Carmichael had the female subject’s credit card information on a piece of paper prior to his arrest and still had the paper on him inside hie jail.

Carmichael then allegedly used the credit card information to call a bail and bonds service company and claimed to be the female and owner of the credit card in order to place his own bail.

When Correction Officers approached and questioned Carmichael about the paper he allegedly flushed it down the toilet of his cell.

Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Corrections staff were directed by Detectives to suspend the transaction. On June 20, Carmichael was released from the Ulster County Jail by the Village of Ellenville Court and was sentenced to probation for his prior unrelated charge.

Detectives were able to trace the credit card information and figured out who it belonged to. The cards rightful owner, a woman living in Wyoming County, didn’t know Carmichael had her credit card information and told authorities she did not know allow him to make the transaction.

Carmichael was located Village of Ellenville and was charged grand larceny and tampering with physical evidence, felonies. He was arraigned in the Town of Saugerties Court and was remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
