A 31-year-old Hudson Valley man was arrested after police say he attempted to have sex with his sleeping sister.

Edward Arthur McFarland III from Ellenville is being charged with two counts of sexual abuse in the first degree. According to the Ellenville Police Department, McFarland entered the bedroom of his sister, who resides at the same address, while she was sleeping. The victim told police that she awoke when she felt someone holding down her arms from behind. She further alleges that her brother pulled off her shorts and attempted to engage in a "sexual act" with her.

After resisting the attack and screaming for help, the suspect fled. The victim later contacted police and identified the man as her brother. McFarland was located by authorities and interviewed by investigators. Police have charged the man with two felonies related to sexual abuse. The suspect was sent the the Ulster County Jail and given a $20 thousand cash bail. He is scheduled to appear in the Village of Ellenville court on Tuesday afternoon.
