A Hudson Valley resident is behind bars after he allegedly didn’t register as a sex offender.

Village of Liberty Police arrested 31-year-old Joseph McCarthy, of Liberty after an investigation that he allegedly didn’t register his address as a sex offender.

Police began investigating in early August after learning that McCarthy moved without advising the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Registered sex offenders are required by law to notify officials within 10 days of any move.

According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, McCarthy was convicted in 2004 for having sex with a 13-year-old girl that he knew. In 2004 he was sentenced to 6 months in prison and 10 years probation.

Friday, McCarthy was charged with failing to register and verify as a sex offender, a felony. He was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court and remanded to Sullivan County Jail without bail.
