A Saugerties man will spend the next two years in prison after a guilty sentence was handed down in a New York courtroom for aggravated identity theft and passport fraud. He spent 25 years living under an assumed identity outside of the continental United States.

According to a press release from the Department of Justice, the two year term will be followed by one year of supervised release. John Staccio stood accused of  of applying for and receiving a passport under a different persons name in 1990 and 2011. He used the name, date of birth and social security number of another person without their knowledge.

Staccio used the illegal passport to live abroad for just about 25 years before getting caught in 2016. A plea deal was reached in late 2016, but the sentencing just occurred.

Although Staccio was 68, I can't help but think of the movie Catch Me If You Can. Was he jet-setting around the world or did he just want to be left alone?
