A Hudson Valley man was found guilty of robbing and stabbing a man in the heart.

In Westchester County Court, Michael Thomas a.k.a. Laquan Smith, 30, of Yonkers was found guilty after a non-jury trial of three counts of robbery, two counts of assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies.

In July 2015, Thomas approached the victim on a Yonkers street, stabbed him in the heart, and stole the victim’s backpack. Officials say minutes before he threatened another victim with a knife and tried to steal from that person as well.

The stabbing victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center. Upon arrival there, the victim was unresponsive and had no pulse. An emergency thoracotomy, cardiac massage, two sequences of defibrillation and heart surgery were required to save his life.

Thomas was remanded to Westchester County Jail. He faces up to 25 years in prison when sentenced on August 31.
