A potential deadly situation, where a Hudson Valley man told police to “shoot him” and “I’m going to die tonight….you can come with me,” ended without bloodshed.

Sunday morning, Dutchess County 911 received a 911 call from a distraught man from Watertower Road in the Town of Hyde Park. The caller said that he had self-inflicted stab wounds and had barricaded himself in the bathroom of the residence.

Responding officers found 41-year-old James L. Havens of Hyde Park on his front porch holding a knife. He told responding officers repeatedly that he wanted the police to, “shoot him” and “end it all right now,” police say.

Havens also allegedly told authorities, “I’m going to die tonight, so why don’t one of you walk through the door so you can come with me."

Haven’s father told officers that there were many firearms inside the house. Around that time, Haven retreated inside the house and starting throwing objects at officials, police say.

Negotiators were able to start a conversation with Haven as the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Services Unit setup a perimeter around the house.

As the standoff continued, Haven is accused of getting increasingly agitated and threatening. Two hours into the standoff, he agreed to come out of the house.

Haven was taken into custody without incident around 6:30 p.m. He was found to have a few small cuts and was taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for treatment and mental health evaluation.

The investigation is continuing.

Hyde Park officers were joined at the scene by uniformed members of the New York State Police, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, City of Poughkeepsie Police Department,  Hyde Park Fire Department, Northern Dutchess Paramedics, and Mobile Life Support Tactical Paramedics.
