A Hudson Valley mother is accused of violently murdering her 14-month-old daughter.

On Thursday in Westchester County Court, 26-year-old Deasia Bartee of Mount Vernon was arraigned on an indictment charging her with second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, all felonies, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

In the early hours of Aug. 5, City of Mount Vernon Police Department were notified about an unresponsive child who had died in her sleep.

Responding officers found the 14-month-old victim, Sami Yusuf, in a play pen. She was laying on her back, with her arms pointing towards the ceiling and her left eye swollen shut. The child had no pulse and was cold to touch, police say.

The victim was taken to Mount Vernon Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

The ER doctor who examined the baby told the police that the child was unusually cold and believed the child had been dead for some time. The doctor also said it was possible the child was even placed in a refrigerator, as she was in an advanced state of decomposition.

The mother, Bartee, was interviewed by police and implicated herself in the death of her child, officals say.

An autopsy ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma of the body with a fracture dislocation of the lumbar spine and internal bleeding. According to authorities, the baby was also significantly underweight and malnourished at the time of her death, weighing 14 points.

Bartee plead not guilty. Her next court date is Oct. 25. If convicted she faces 25 years to life in prison.
