Hudson Valley Native Signs With NBA Team

A Hudson Valley basketball prospect is getting his shot at the big time.

The Charlotte Hornets announced they've signed Monroe native Mike Tobey to a contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Tobey recently played summer ball with the Hornets at the Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League.

“We really liked what we saw in Mike during mini-camp and he continued to impress throughout Summer League,” Charlotte Hornets General Manager Rich Cho stated. “He is a talented young big man with a lot of potential and we look forward to seeing what he can do moving forward.”

Like many high school athletic prospects, Tobey attended preparatory school - though his prep journey would cover a lot of miles.

He first entered Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, New Jersey. He left after two years and transferred to The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. He would transfer again, this time to Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey, where he would finish his high school career in 2012.

Tobey attended college at the University of Virginia, where he played for four years. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Sixth Man of the Year after his junior year 2014-15. and his 138 games played is an all-time school record for men's basketball.

While he wasn't drafted in the NBA's recent lottery, he'll undoubtedly make his mark in the pros.
