A local school district is considering a move that would rename Columbus Day and change the way the holiday is taught in classrooms.

According to the New Paltz Times, the change was proposed last year in the New Paltz School District but never implemented. This year, school officials are looking to make it official.

If approved the school would refer to the holiday as Indigenous Peoples Day. The change would go deeper than just a name, however. School officials plan on teaching about Native Americans and the full story of our country's origin.

Other school districts in New York have already adopted similar policies regarding Columbus Day. Rochester, Plattsburgh and Niagara Wheatfield school districts all celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. States such as Alaska, Oregon and Hawaii don't celebrate Columbus Day at all.

We want to know what you think about the idea to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. Does this more properly reflect our history or would you rather see the tradition of celebrating Christopher Columbus continued?
