I don't know if hypnotism works. I mean, I can imagine that there are some people susceptible to the constant repetition of chanted mantras or the back and forth swinging of a pocket watch or something. And there are certainly top notch films based around the phenomenon of people going through life hypnotized:

Then again I've also been to comedy hypnotist shows wherein there were people on stage that were definitely doing everything they could to convince the audience (and seemingly themselves) that they were under the influence of hypnotism.

But hey, what I think doesn't matter in this particular situation, because we're dealing with a guy here who has had something awful happen to him and he blames the nefarious black magic and witchery of the hypnotist in question.
