Iconic New York Rollercoaster Turns 89

One of New York's iconic cultural landmarks is almost 90.

The Cyclone, the classic wooden rollercoaster, is among the most notable features of Coney Island, and it represents to many a very cool, classic New York aesthetic. Alongside Nathan's (and the hot dog eating contest which, might I remind you, is right around the corner), the Cyclone is probably the first thing people think of when they imagine Coney Island.

Despite having many--wait for it--ups and downs (sorry) over the years, it remains operational. It has been declared a New York City landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It costs $10 to ride now, compared to the 25 cents the park charged when the ride opened on June 26, 1927.

Last summer, the New York Post floated the theory that it was the most dangerous roller coaster in America.
