Hear me out. I don't think I'm going out on a limb here by saying neither of the NY football teams are going to the playoffs this year. There are amazing gaps in talent on both teams, and I'll be honest, I think both teams are going to have a new head coach next year. Hell, they both might have a new GM at this point.

So, simply put, which team is in worse shape? I'm a Giants fan, but I'd like to think I'm pretty objective. I'm going to break it down into a few categories:

1. QB. Of course, Eli Manning is better than all the QB's on the Jets rolled into one. BUT. The new offense he's in this year clearly isn't clicking. They rarely throw the ball deep downfield, and Eli mae his living on big plays....especially in the playoffs. He's also 33. He's also making a quarter of a million dollars UNDER 20 million next season, which is his last under contract. Lots of QB's these days are throwing well into their late 30's, but they have THEIR offenses, with THEIR weapons. This is a new system for Eli. So, the question is: Do you commit to Eli for another 3-5 years, at massive bucks, with a system he might not be suited for? Because if the answer is no, you're in the same position as the Jets.

2. Offensive line. Holy yuck. Both teams. I hope the Pugh can continue to get better for the Giants, and Weston Richburg proves the Giants right for drafting him in the 2nd round. But the rest of that line is scary. Eli may be killed eventually. Same goes for whoever the Jets QB is. Mangold is an all-pro, but he's no spring chicken.  Both lines need serious infusions of talent.

3. Wide Receivers. I actually think the Jets take this category, going away. Percy Harvin, if he can keep his head on straight, is a BEAST. He's a proven burner and he can change a game whenever he gets his hands on the ball. Eric Decker is NOT a #1, but he might benefit more from Harvin being on the team than anyone else. For the Giants, Reuben Randle is a consummate disappointment. Half the time, it honestly looks like he and Eli have never met before. Preston Parker couldn't catch a cold at this point, and if he managed to get sick, he'd immediately fumble it and infect everyone else in the room. God knows when Cruz is coming back. Odell looks like a gamer, but he's a rookie. Let's calm down till after Defensive Coordinators start game planning against him.

4. Tight Ends. I still think Jace Amaro is going to be a great receiver. I was really disappointed when the Giants didn't get him in the draft. Anyone seen Donnell catch a pass lately? I give the slight edge to the Jets.

5. Defensive front seven. JPP is in his walk year, and it doesn't look like it'll make much of a difference when he's gone. Kiwanuka has never lived up to his promise, but mostly because the Giants moved him from LB to DE, to DT, to LB and back again. He should be gone. Beason is out for the season with a toe. Yep. A Toe. Everyone is waiting for Damontre Moore to make an appearance on the line. And I think we're going to be kept waiting for awhile. Meanwhile, the Jets front seven is stacked. Just a bunch of monsters.

6. Defensive backfield: The Giants corners at set with DRC and Amukamara. Oh wait. Prince is gone for the year. Like Thurmond and Demps before him. Stevie Brown is non-existent at safety and Antrell Rolle is a free agent after this year. The Jets, meanwhile, have people many people don't know at cornerback. Slight edge for the Giants, but only because of DRC.

7. Salary Cap. THIS IS IMPORTANT. The projected salary cap is $140 million. The Giants currently have $119 million committed, with no starting safeties, only 1 good receiver and no defensive ends. The Jets are at $98 million currently. They need a QB, an offensive line and new cornerbacks. They're also currently looking at a first round draft pick in the top 5.

If the Jets can somehow find a way to get a QB and draft/sign 3 new offensive linemen, they can get good and in a hurry.

I worry about how patchwork the Giants team feels. DRC and Amukamara are awesome, but they have to stay on the field. Rashad Jennings needs to stay on the field. They NEED to find a consistent TE. They NEED to find a bunch of safeties. They NEED to find bodies on the defensive line who can get to the passer.

At the end of the day, I think both teams are in trouble. QB's are the hardest thing in the game to find. BUT if the Jets can find one, I think they have a better than 75% chance to be the better team in NY, and for awhile.
