A new report released by the New York Department of Labor indicates that the area has showed limited amounts of job gains in the region.

While the region, which includes Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester Counties, has seen an overall increase of 4,200 jobs or (0.5 percent) over the past year, the growth has occurred in only 3 of 9 private industry sectors.

The industries that saw growth included educational and health services (+5,700), leisure and hospitality (+2,200), and other services (+700).

Meanwhile, those that suffered included financial activities (-1,200), natural resources, mining and construction (-1,100), professional and business services (-800), manufacturing (-600), and trade, transportation and utilities (-500), while the governmental sector eliminated 1200 jobs.

The outliers included educational and health services and the financial sector:

The [educational and health services] sector grew by 3.0 percent over the year – its strongest September year-to-year growth since 1999. Meanwhile, the region’s financial activities sector continued to struggle – down 2.7 percent over the year- its largest September year-to-year decline since 2010.
