Jon Stewart has made enough election appearances of late, that we’d almost forgotten talk that the former Daily Show host might have his new HBO animated projects up and running by the end of the year. Now, HBO offers a quick update on Stewart’s Onion-style series as we head into 2017.

Back in July, HBO boss Casey Bloys described the as-yet-untitled series as a “parody of a cable news network,” with an aim to premiere sometime before the November elections, either September or October. Stewart was to lend his literal and figurative voice, though Bloys now tells Entertainment Weekly the project will likely debut in 2017:

In terms of Jon Stewart, he really is putting together a whole animation studio. My hope is that it’s up and running and putting out content in first quarter of ‘17. Does the election change things? I think it’s more important, now more than ever, that we have voices like that who will parse the information and call out what’s going on.

Stewart’s four-year deal will see him producing short-form digital content to be showcased on HBO Now, HBO Go and various other platforms, with the aid of cloud graphics company OTOY Inc. Bloys also stated that the simple animation technology would enable Stewart to “respond to things very quickly.”

It’s unclear if anything of Stewart’s vision has changed in recent months, but will a 2017 premiere be worth the wait?
