A K-9, named after a Hudson Valley Police Officer who lost his life while serving, has passed away.

Falcone, a K-9 who worked in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department, passed away on July 20th after experiencing an unexpected medical emergency called Mesenteric-torsion. The name Falcone may sound familiar to us here in the Hudson Valley. The K-9 was named in honor of Detective John Falcone of the City Poughkeepsie Police Department who was killed in the line of duty on February 18, 2011.

According to the Falcone Gunther Memorial Run Facebook page, Falcone the K-9 prevented and solve numerous crimes in the New York City area. He and his handler, Sgt. Edward O’Flaherty, were also on hand to protect dignitaries and two sitting Presidents while they visited New York City. Falcone was a top contender last month at the USPCA Patrol Certifications and was certified by the United States Police Canine Association of New York State. He was also a graduate of the MTA PD Canine Training Center Mass Transit Tactical Canine Program.

Rest in peace, Falcone. You will be greatly missed.
