Edward McCoy,21, was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in state prison for a burglary he committed on October 23, 2017. McCoy was convicted in April of 2018 in a trial before Ulster County Court Judge Williams.

According to Ulster County District Attorney Holley Carnright, McCoy committed a residential burglary in Kingston while the house was occupied by a college student.  The student's family had left the house at 7:00 am to take the student's siblings to school.  Shortly after her family left, the co-ed heard noises in another part of the house.  She texted her mother to see if they had returned and the mother said they didn't and that it was probably the family cat making the noises. Moments later a burglar entered the student's bedroom and became startled when the girl let out a scream.

McCoy fled the house while the student captured a few pictures of him on her cell phone.  A 911 call was made and Kingston police responded immediately.  McCoy was found moments later, a few blocks from the house.  He was still in possession of jewelry stolen from the house at the time of his apprehension.
