In August of 2013 a Dutchess County residence reported over $8,000 dollars worth of stolen goods. Following a two-plus year investigation, police have made an arrest.

New York State Police from the Wappinger Bureau of Criminal Investigation have arrested 28-year-old Shawn M. Smith. The Hyde Park resident was charged with burglary in the 2nd-degree, a class C felony.

In August of 2013, State Troopers were sent to investigate a residential burglary that occurred on Old Hopewell Road in the Town of Wappinger. The victim reported that over $8,000 worth of jewelry and foreign currency was stolen from her home.

In a press release, police say Smith was identified as the alleged thief through DNA evidence that was found during the investigation.

The DNA evidence also led City of Pougkeepsie Police to charge Smith for a separate burglary.

On Dec. 3, Smith was charged with the August 2013 burglary and arraigned in the Town of Wappinger Court.  He was returned to the custody of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s office where he is currently lodged.

The State Police were assisted by the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office and the Town of Fishkill Police Department.
