A man running for office in the Hudson Valley launched a petition against the controversial Dream Act.

Monday, the New York Assembly passed the Dream Act, which allows undocumented aliens to be eligible to apply for college financial aid.

The legislation has now been voted on and supported twice during this current legislative term alone by Democratic Assembly members from the Hudson Valley.

Colin J. Schmitt, candidate for the 99th NYS Assembly District, launched a petition for concerned citizens to sign who oppose using $27 Million in taxpayer money to fund free college tuition for illegal aliens.

The petition reads:

“Sign the petition today to show you stand with our Assembly candidate Colin Schmitt and oppose spending $27 Million in taxpayer dollars to provide free college tuition for illegal aliens in New York.

This plan by the New York City controlled state assembly is supported by Assembly Democratic members from our area.

These local Assembly members must drop their support for this outrageous legislation and put Hudson Valley families and students first.”

Prior to launching the petition, Schmitt released a statement showing his disapproval of the Dream Act.

"We have families struggling to afford a college education for their children. Many men and women in Orange and Rockland Counties, like myself, are saddled with student loan debt that will take years to pay off. Yet our Democratic Assembly members are dedicated to taking our tax dollars to give illegal aliens free college tuition. This is exactly why I am running for State Assembly.

We must be represented by someone who will defend our values and our community.

As your Assemblyman I will never support taxpayer funded free college for illegal aliens and will be the loudest voice to stop this insanity."
