A police incident caused severe traffic problems on major roads in the Hudson Valley late this afternoon.

Beacon police confirmed a man had been shot by the police, resulting in major road closures affecting I84 in both directions late this afternoon.

Beacon Mayor Randy Casale said he believed the incident may have been the result of a car-jacking, but referred further questions to Beacon city police.

Linda Foglia, spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, said that reports of an escaped inmate were incorrect.

"There were no escaped inmates either from Downstate Correctional Facility or Fishkill Correctional Facility," Foglia said.

According to various sources, including Mid-Hudson News and the Times Herald-Record, the man was seen brandishing a knife.
